Strategic alliances and partnerships formed between individuals, organizations, or nations that align with and actively contribute to achieving shared objectives. These synergistic connections leverage collective resources, expertise, and actions to effectively pursue and attain established ambitions or targets.
Universitas Indonesia is directly involved in SDG policy development of the national government, including in identifying problems and challenges, developing policies and strategies, as well as modelling. For instance, UI establishes SDGs Hub serving as a hub for all activities and programs on sustainable development goals (SDGs) in UI that covers the economic, social, and environmental fields. The SDGs Hub of UI is also appointed as the main coordinator of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network for Indonesia chapter whose headquarters is based in Columbia University, New York.
The involvement of UI with NGOs and regional and national governments in the development of SDG policies is manifested in various activities. Through its health faculties, UI actively supports the Covid-19 pandemic mitigation and the acceleration of vaccines. For example, in 2021, Faculty of Public Health (FKM) was engaged with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in relation to Acceleration Research on COVID-19 Handling. FKM was also engaged with the Ministry of Health related to Study Preparation and the Policy of Increasing the Role of State Universities and Vocational Universities in providing special study programs and limiting surfeited study programs. Furthermore, Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) opened a vaccination center officially observed by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ma’ruf Amin. This vaccine center aims to help the government program to accelerate the COVID-19 vaccination rate. On the other hand, the research team of Faculty of Medicine (FK) of UI, who are members the Medical Students in COVID-19 (MEDICO-19) Research Group, compiled a Policy Brief entitled “From Education to Vaccination: Increasing the Contribution of Medical Students in Pandemic and Disaster Management.” This effort was born from the willingness and readiness of medical students to become volunteers to overcome the pandemic and their concern regarding the massive blow to the health system of Indonesia due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Universitas Indonesia routinely initiates and participates in cross-sectoral dialogues related to Sustainable Development Goals, such as organizing conferences involving the government or NGOs. For instance, UI held a webinar on “Prospects and Challenges of the National Battery Industry”. This webinar invited the government, industries, and academic speakers to discuss the future of batteries in Indonesia. Then, Faculty of Psychology and the National Civil Service Agency (BKN) debated the importance of the human resource aspect in supporting the sustainable development of the new capital city of Indonesia. Faculty of Psychology also discussed the well-being of students with teachers, faculty members, and Semai Jiwa Amini Foundation (SEJIWA). This non-profit organization focuses on the safety and protection of children in the real world and cyberspace.

Moreover, Faculty of Public Health (FKM) organized the 11th APRU Population Aging Virtual Conference promoting the theme “Challenge & Resilience Related to Aging Population: Surviving and Thriving towards Successful Aging” on April 7-8, 2021. Inviting 15 speakers from 7 countries, 81 participants from 11 countries, and 171 attendees from 20 countries, this conference focused on defining, measuring, and improving resilience in older adults in the age of longevity. In addition, School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG) collaborated with the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) to hold the 2021 AUA and ICSGS Academic Conference with the theme of “Global Strategies for a Resilient and Sustainable Post-Pandemic World towards a Better Future for All.”

Furthermore, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) coordinated a public lecture discussing the issue of Sustainable Development Goals and their relation to the protection of the human rights of vulnerable groups. Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) held a public webinar on Climate Change and the Role of Renewable Energy.
The UI Green Metric is an annual international ranking of the sustainability performance of universities. Universities are given a score reflecting their efforts in reducing their ecological footprint and conducting sustainability education and research. The ranking was launched in 2010 by Universitas Indonesia to promote sustainability in higher education institutions and allow comparisons between them. Since then, the number of participants has grown and the methodology has been refined based on feedback from the participating universities.
Faculty of Law (FH) and Faculty of Medicine (FK) have collaborated with international organizations. In 2021, Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana (Professor of FH UI) was elected as the chairman of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL). AsianSIL is a prestigious international legal association of academics and practitioners in Asia. Meanwhile, FK UI and the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM) of Japan have collaborated in providing solutions to overcome global health problems. This collaboration aims to explore the possibility of developing various research programs and other partnerships, such as student, staff, and researcher exchanges. In addition, to be creative and actively participate in the Academic Research Organization (ARO) Alliance for ASEAN and East Asia (ARISE) as a forum to increase networking in clinical research. Furthermore, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) held an International Public Lecture with the topic “The Contribution of Green Social Work to the Environmental Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic”.
UI and NCGM Japan Clinical Research Collaboration and Student Exchange
International research and collaboration have been held through various activities at Universitas Indonesia. The Directorate of Research and Development (Risbang) of UI has research collaborations with other universities. For example, the Partnership for Australia-Indonesia Research (PAIR) Project of Australia Indonesia Center of “Understanding the Livelihoods and Aspirations of Young People in the Context of Agrarian Change and Development in Maros District, South Sulawesi” (research collaboration between Monash University, Melbourne University, Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung and Universitas Hasanuddin) and Bilateral Strategic Alliance (UI-UiTM BISA) (research collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM)).
In 2019-2021, researchers from Faculty of Nursing of UI and College of Nursing of the University of Illinois at Chicago conducted international collaborative research about IMPART. The study proves that when an individual in the Correctional Institution has been confirmed to be infected with the HIV virus, notifying their partners (either independently or with health workers) can increase the willingness of the partners to do an HIV screening test and start antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatment. Furthermore, researchers from Faculty of Nursing of UI and School Health Sciences of the University of Manchester conducted international collaborative research entitled “Reducing Relapse for People with Schizophrenia in Indonesia: Developing Culturally Relevant Evidence-Based Family Interventions”. This study aims to adapt and refine an evidence-based family intervention for relatives and carers of people with schizophrenia in Java, Indonesia.
Collaborative Research between Faculty of nursing UI and University of Illinois
UI through Faculty of Medicine (FK) establishes an international collaboration with the University of Oxford, UK, through the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (EOCRU). EOCRU was established in 2008 through a memorandum of understanding between the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology and the University of Oxford. The collaboration between UI and the University of Oxford includes cooperation in the field of clinical research as well as the establishment of the Universities of Indonesia and the Oxford Clinical Research Laboratory (IOCRL) located in the Department of Parasitology, FK UI. Faculty of Law (FH) also established international research collaborations with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), World Trade Organization (WTO), Texas A&M University School of Law, University of Geneva, International Islamic University Malaysia, and Nanyang Technological University to organize The Third IP & Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) Conference in 2021.
Universitas Indonesia through Faculty of Medicine (FK) collaborates with an NGO named Lions Indonesia Foundation to organize community service activities in the field of eye health. The foundation is engaged in social and humanitarian fields with eye health programs for the underprivileged. This activity involves Specialist Medical Education Program (PPDS) students and faculty members providing eye health education, examining refractive errors, and providing eye screening. In addition, Faculty of Nursing collaborates with Baitul Maal Foundation of the State Electricity Company (YBM PLN) in a program to improve the health and well-being of the underprivileged, with the theme of “Improving the Health Quality and Productivity of the Underprivileged in Curug Village during the Covid-19 Pandemic”. This activity is a part of the commitment of Faculty of Nursing to contribute to the health and welfare of the surrounding community. This program is conducted by faculty members and students from professional and specialist study programs. The strategy used in this program is community nursing practices, including group process, health education, capacity building, and family/community empowerment. Similarly, Faculty of Psychology collaborates with Semai Jiwa Amini Foundation (SEJIWA). This non-profit organization focuses on the safety and protection of children in the real world and cyberspace. Faculty of Psychology also collaborates with Wahana Inclusive Indonesia Foundation (WII), a non-profit organization focusing on inclusive education.
Another form of collaboration is between the Legal Clinic of Faculty of Law (FH) with several legal institutions that provide opportunities for students to provide legal assistance and volunteer activities in various real cases. This program improves the practical skills of students and develops human resources in law school to be ready for the legal industry. The cases also vary depending on the cooperation partners such as Akara Perempuan, Legal Aids of Indonesian Women’s Association for Justice (LBH Apik), Indonesian Center for Environmental Law (ICEL), Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative (IOJI), or other legal aid institutions. Furthermore, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) have a joint program with HVF Germany to enhance the knowledge of students and faculty members about public management between Germany and Indonesia.

In supporting SDG 1, Faculty of Medicine (FK) initiates “Plenary Scholarship for the Nation (BPuB).” This program is expected to produce quality graduates, namely capable doctors who have social awareness, uphold the name of the alma mater, and are devoted to the homeland and nation. Moreover, Faculty of Public Health (FKM) and School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG) published a few international journal articles.

Vocational Program introduces a bonding application that can detect mental health disorders in deaf children early. During the COVID-19 pandemic where learning is carried out remotely, many children develop mental health problems. Mental health in deaf children is detected late by teachers and parents due to limited communication. Moreover, Department of Community Service of Student Executive Board of Student Family Association (BEM IKM) of Faculty of Medicine (FK) in collaboration with experts from the Department of Psychiatry of FK UI – Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) initiate a movement called Quality Time in Quarantine, or called QualityTine. QualityTine is a series of events and services aimed at assisting and improving the mental health of the community during the pandemic in the efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These services include publications on Instagram, challenges, webinars, and recommendations for useful activities to do at home. All of the content refers to credible sources and is carefully selected by doctors from the Department of Psychiatry of FKUI-RSCM. Meanwhile, Faculty of Law (FH), Faculty of Public Health (FKM), and School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG) published a few international journal articles.

The dedicated integration of Sustainable Development Goals into educational curricula, offering specialized and impactful learning experiences that emphasize the importance of sustainability, and preparing students to contribute to global sustainability efforts through informed knowledge and action.
Universitas Indonesia is committed to develop education to achieve SDGs, as regulated through the Rector’s Decree on compulsory subjects on the university level. The curriculum from each department is required to include the commitment to attain SDGs. UI also provides numerous free contents accessible to the public. UI has several Open Educational Resources accessible to the public. Some courses are free and some are payable.
Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) of UI is a learning network initiated by the World Bank in 2000 with currently more than 120 learning centers (GDLN affiliates). Its main goal is to enable GDLN affiliates to host coordination, consultation, and training events in a timely and cost-effective manner through videoconferencing, high-speed internet resources, and interactive facilitation and learning techniques. GDLN UI hosts several video conference-based learning events, such as training, seminars, or joint courses. Anyone interested in the event may register and attend.

To date, UI already have a vast collection of 1047 educational videos, accessible through http://ovis.ui.ac.id/.
Since 2020, UI has initiated the development and implementation of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Prior to MOOCs, UI opened up its courses to approximately 3085 students from other universities through the Integrated Open Online Learning of Indonesia (PDITT) of the Ministry of Education in 2014. Up to the present time, UI has developed over 152 MOOCs from each faculty. Some of them are in the development phase, and some of them have been started and enrolled by students. UI is committed to provide educational programs related to SDGs. UI has implemented Sustainable Development Goals-based Curriculum according to the Freedom to Learn, Independent Campus promoted by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
In 2021, Faculty of Computer Sciences (Fasilkom) opened 16 MOOCs that are accessible to everyone. This initiative aims to provide the widest possible opportunity for the community to obtain the same education as UI students.
