Supporting Land Ecosystems through Education

Promoting the health and sustainability of land-based ecosystems by employing educational strategies aimed at enhancing awareness, imparting knowledge, and fostering environmental stewardship among individuals and communities to ensure the conservation and restoration of terrestrial habitats and biodiversity for current and future generations.

Universitas Indonesia, through various programs, supports the achievement of SDG 15, particularly in the indicator of Events about Sustainable Use of Land. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UI) undertakes several initiatives aimed at conserving biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems. One significant initiative is the development of a botanical garden and durian conservation center in Sukabumi, which aims to preserve local plant species and enhance biodiversity education for the community. Additionally, FMIPA UI conducts biodiversity awareness training for students at Al-Muhajirin Islamic Boarding School in Purwakarta as part of its environment-based educational program. On campus, UI has implemented green space management and reduced parking areas as efforts to create an eco-friendly campus environment. The Faculty of Psychology at UI, for example, has reduced car parking spaces and replaced them with green areas and bike-sharing facilities, supporting sustainable land use and reducing emissions. These programs reflect UI’s commitment to land conservation within the campus environment and the wider community, promoting the sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems through educational collaboration, conservation, and green technology.

Other program activities, such as tree planting by new students in Vocational Education Program at Universitas Indonesia, aim to increase environmental awareness and create a greener campus. This initiative aligns with the concept of the Carbon Economic Value (NEK), which calculates the economic impact of greenhouse gas emissions and encourages the involvement of local governments. In the public discussion “The Role of Local Government in Managing NEK,” organized by LPEM FEB UI, the Ford Foundation, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, challenges and opportunities to support NEK were discussed as part of climate change mitigation. Meanwhile, the JCAF #22 session at the New York Climate Week Summit highlighted innovative financing opportunities for peatland and forest conservation that support sustainable economic growth. Through these initiatives, UI contributes to ecosystem sustainability while supporting global climate commitments.

The Faculty of Administrative Sciences at Universitas Indonesia  (FIA UI) participates in environmental preservation and land ecosystem conservation, supporting eco-friendly land use practices on campus. Education on Urban Farming in Educational Environments by SKSG UI

Universitas Indonesia actively supports sustainable agriculture on campus through various initiatives. One of its flagship programs is the hydroponic crop harvest, involving the academic community of the UI Vocational Education Program. This program promotes sustainable agricultural practices by efficiently using land and producing healthy food for the campus community. The hydroponic system not only reduces the need for conventional agricultural land but also minimizes water and chemical pesticide usage, thereby supporting a healthier ecosystem.

This initiative aligns with national policies outlined in Law Number 22 of 2019 on the Sustainable Agricultural Cultivation System, which supports eco-friendly farming and natural resource conservation. Through this program, UI not only focuses on education and research but also provides a practical example for students and the broader community on the importance of protecting the environment through responsible farming practices. These efforts reinforce UI’s commitment to supporting land ecosystem sustainability and contributing to sustainable food practices on campus.

UI Vocational Program Invites Academic Community to Harvest Hydroponic Plants

Universitas Indonesia actively preserves biodiversity to maintain and expand existing ecosystems, including both plant and animal life. One such effort is led by the Faculty of Psychology, which conserves ornamental plants such as orchids and medicinal plants and provides a natural habitat for local wildlife around the campus. These plants are well-cared for through regular fertilization, watering, and maintenance, creating a balanced environment for both flora and fauna.

Additionally, research conducted by Universitas Indonesia, such as the analysis of tarsier duet calls by a team of scientists, contributes significantly to understanding rare species and enhancing efforts to protect them from extinction. Universitas Indonesia also collaborates with various partners, including eFishery and programs like Smart Green Action, to promote sustainable land and ecosystem conservation while supporting urban agriculture and the development of green spaces on campus and in surrounding communities. These conservation efforts reflect UI’s commitment to supporting land ecosystem sustainability through conservation and education, involving both the campus community and the broader public.

Universitas Indonesia is committed to preserving biodiversity and protecting land ecosystems through various programs and collaborations. The Faculty of Administrative Sciences (FIA UI) plays an active role in conservation activities that utilize campus infrastructure to support a sustainable environment. These conservation programs include the care of local plants, fish conservation, and the preservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture within dedicated facilities for medium- and long-term needs. Additionally, the Social Celebration program by the Community Engagement Department of BEM FEB UI on May 21, 2023, included beach cleaning and mangrove planting activities at K’SS Cituis Beach. This event, which involved students as well as local communities such as LMDH, the Indonesian Navy, and the Sukawali community, aimed to reduce waste impact and protect coastal ecosystems through mangrove conservation.

Universitas Indonesia also held a webinar on bamboo and biodiversity conservation and launched the Smart Green 2023 program, which involved planting local fruit seedlings. These initiatives not only strengthen UI’s commitment to environmental preservation but also educate students and the community on the importance of ecosystem conservation and sustainable land use practices.

Universitas Indonesia has developed various educational programs about ecosystems, particularly through the use of the UI Urban Forest as a learning platform. The UI Urban Forest, home to diverse flora and fauna, serves as a resource for students, schoolchildren, and the general public to learn about biodiversity and the importance of protecting ecosystems. Here, visitors can directly observe local plant and animal species within an integrated ecosystem. The Faculty of Medicine at UI also offers over 500 courses related to environmental sustainability, focusing on understanding land ecosystems and environmental health. Through these programs, UI aims to raise public awareness about the importance of ecosystem conservation, positioning the campus as a center for environmental education and recreation that benefits both the local and national community.

Universitas Indonesia continues to support conservation and environmental education activities through various programs involving students and the community. Programs like ‘Gertakau,’ organized by the BEM Vocational Program UI in Desa Pantai Bakti, focus not only on solar panel installation but also on highlighting the importance of renewable energy and community involvement in environmental preservation. This initiative helps raise public awareness about sustainability and the importance of clean energy. Additionally, UI’s efforts in urban farming education aim to strengthen food security and promote sustainable farming practices within educational settings. Universitas Indonesia, through BEM Vocational UI, has developed a community service program to support the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the tourist village of Kubang Baros. Universitas Indonesia, through various educational and community service programs, actively supports the achievement of SDG 15, especially in sustainable land management for tourism. One flagship program is the educational initiative in Katapang Tourist Village, aimed at raising local awareness about the importance of land management that preserves ecosystems while enhancing natural tourism potential. By promoting wise land use, this program ensures that tourism in the village remains sustainable without harming the environment. Additionally, FH UI supports legal awareness education related to land registration in Pilangsari Village, Indramayu, West Java. This program complements land conservation initiatives by providing the community with an understanding of land ownership rights and the importance of land legality, which serves as a foundation for sustainable land use from a legal perspective.

Vocational Education Program at Universitas Indonesia also contributes through activities that engage the academic community in hydroponic urban farming, which can be applied in land management for tourism. This program educates participants on eco-friendly farming techniques for limited spaces, which can be implemented in tourism areas as both an attraction and a source of local food. Through this educational approach, UI not only promotes sustainable land management practices for tourism but also equips the community and students with knowledge to balance economic development with environmental preservation. An initiative that entails proactive engagement in activities and measures designed to protect, restore, and enhance terrestrial ecosystems, incorporating practical conservation efforts, sustainable practices, and community involvement to maintain biodiversity and ecological balance on land, thereby securing the wellbeing of these habitats for future sustainability.

 

Universitas Indonesia has a comprehensive policy supporting sustainable land use, conservation, and restoration on its campus. Through Rector’s Decree Number 2446/SK/R/UI/2016, UI has established guidelines for the sustainable preservation and use of terrestrial ecosystems, including the conservation of forest areas, green spaces, and water catchment zones on its Depok campus. This policy includes strategies for utilizing green open spaces and water-absorbent areas, such as gardens, pedestrian pathways, and con-block-based parking areas that naturally manage rainwater. This policy not only enhances campus aesthetics but also plays a crucial role in flood prevention, maintaining groundwater quality, and conserving the local ecosystem.

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability beyond campus, the Faculty of Law UI (FH UI) contributes to community service programs focused on waste management and sustainability in Ped Village, Nusa Penida, Bali. This program provides education and guidance to village residents on effective waste management techniques to reduce pollution and keep the tourist environment clean and sustainable. Additionally, the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UI) maintains a water catchment area covering 71.39% of its grounds, supporting water management and reducing flood risk. Through policies and programs both on and off campus, UI is committed to sustainable land management and environmental conservation that foster long-term ecosystem balance.

Universitas Indonesia protects and conserves plant and animal species listed on conservation lists, including those on the IUCN Red List. This commitment is in harmony with existing regulations, such as the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia (No. 106/2018) and Government Regulation No. 7/1999 on species preservation. UI identifies, monitors, and forms protection plans for these species to prevent extinction, safeguard natural habitats, and mitigate threats. This proactive stance significantly contributes to preserving Indonesia’s rich biodiversity and fostering ecosystem sustainability, underlining UI’s role as a leader in environmental stewardship and education.

Universitas Indonesia actively integrates local biodiversity into campus planning and development to support ecosystem conservation. A key policy in this effort is the establishment of a sports park in the new zone of the Fasilkom UI building, designed as a green area with various local plants, serving as an eco-friendly open space. The Faculty of Psychology at UI also promotes biodiversity conservation through the cultivation of ornamental and medicinal plants on its premises. Among these are orchid conservation efforts and a mini garden with medicinal plants like kumis kucing and miana, which are carefully maintained to ensure the sustainability of local flora. The faculty allows wildlife to inhabit the campus surroundings to help maintain ecosystem balance and has placed informative banners about local flora and fauna to raise environmental awareness among the academic community.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UI) demonstrates its commitment to sustainable land management through various conservation initiatives and eco-friendly infrastructure planning. Within FEB UI, 71.39% of the surface area is water-absorbent, including gardens, pedestrian paths, and con-block-based parking areas, functioning as natural water catchments to prevent flooding and maintain groundwater quality around the campus. Additionally, FEB UI has implemented green spaces covering 68.8% of the faculty’s total area, comprising gardens, lawns, and vegetation that play an important role in supporting the local ecosystem. Furthermore, medium- to long-term conservation programs are in place for plants, animals, and genetic resources beneficial to the food and agriculture sectors. These programs not only focus on the preservation of plants and fish within the campus area but also educate the academic community on the importance of maintaining environmental balance for sustainability. The UI Vocational Education Program also supports sustainability efforts through the development of eco-friendly infrastructure, including green open spaces, permeable parking areas, and facilities designed to minimize environmental impact. Universitas Indonesia actively supports the implementation of policies aligned with the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. P.94/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/12/2016, which aims to reduce the impact of invasive alien species on local ecosystems and biodiversity. This regulation defines invasive species as those that disrupt ecological, economic, and health systems, originating from outside or spreading within Indonesia. UI promotes these policies by emphasizing risk assessments, control protocols, and, if necessary, eradication measures. As part of its commitment, UI encourages monitoring and awareness on campus, supporting efforts to prevent the introduction of new invasive species and manage existing ones. The regulation’s requirement for regular updates on invasive species lists every two years further aligns with UI’s goal to protect biodiversity and maintain ecological balance within its campus environment and beyond.

Universitas Indonesia organized Joint Study Series 2: Maximizing Green Marketing, aimed at educating students and the public on the importance of eco-friendly innovation and green marketing to address the challenges of global population growth. UI also actively participates in social actions, including fundraising for victims of the cold lahar flood in Lumajang on July 8, 2023, and conducting the GERTAKAU 2023 program, committed to creating sustainable positive environmental impacts. On campus, UI implements access regulations in line with Rector’s Regulation No. 041 of 2017 to support order and security. A waste management approach that prioritizes the protection of terrestrial habitats by ensuring the responsible disposal of refuse, minimizing soil contamination and preserving the natural state of land-based ecosystems. It involves strategies that reduce landfill impact through recycling, composting, and the safe treatment of hazardous substances.

Universitas Indonesia has implemented a comprehensive policy on water management and conservation to support campus environmental preservation efforts. A key aspect of this policy includes water quality standards and disposal guidelines, established under Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 on the Administration of Environmental Protection and Management and PUPR Regulation No. 04/PRT/M/2017 on the Administration of Domestic Wastewater Management Systems. This policy aims to maintain the quality of water used and disposed of from the campus to prevent contamination of the surrounding environment, especially the aquatic ecosystems near the campus.

At the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UI), water pollution control programs have been implemented through domestic wastewater treatment installations, such as a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) system at the cafeteria and Biotech-based wastewater treatment technology in faculty buildings. Additionally, FEB UI has introduced clean water conservation efforts by creating infiltration wells and Biopore Infiltration Holes (LRB), which effectively reduce rainwater runoff and recharge groundwater reserves. On the other hand, the Faculty of Computer Science (Fasilkom UI) has also adopted clean water conservation practices, including recycling systems for toilet use, plant irrigation, and rainwater utilization. These policies reflect UI’s commitment to responsibly managing water resources and ensuring the sustainability of clean water for the academic community and the campus environment.

Water Conservation Policy at UI

Vocational Education Program at Universitas Indonesia  implements eco-friendly waste management by providing waste sorting and recycling facilities to reduce negative impacts on the ecosystem. At the Faculty of Public Health (FKM UI), various initiatives are conducted to raise awareness about the importance of terrestrial ecosystems and sustainable land management. FKM UI focuses on utilizing green spaces within the campus to support environmental sustainability while serving as a learning area for local biodiversity. The Faculty of Administrative Sciences (FIA UI) also participates in land conservation programs, emphasizing waste management practices sensitive to terrestrial ecosystems. The School of Environmental Science (SIL UI) and the School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG UI) implement water quality standards and disposal guidelines designed to protect ecosystem quality and human health. These schools also optimize the use of biopores, which help increase water absorption, manage organic waste, and reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season. Through these policies, UI demonstrates its commitment to supporting ecosystem balance and environmental sustainability.

Universitas Indonesia has established a policy to reduce plastic waste on campus through the Zero Plastic Program, as outlined in Rector Regulation No. 4 of 2019. This policy aims to minimize single-use plastic consumption and encourages the university community to switch to eco-friendly alternatives, such as reusable bottles and bags. In celebration of World Environment Day 2023, UI once again highlighted the dangers of plastic pollution, a shared global issue, and called upon the campus community to take greater responsibility in managing plastic waste.

The Faculty of Pharmacy has also implemented a policy to reduce plastic and paper use in support of environmental sustainability. The faculty minimizes plastic packaging in various activities and educates students on the harmful effects of plastic on ecosystems. Through various faculties and initiatives such as Green Metric, UI consistently promotes environmental awareness by enforcing plastic waste reduction policies, underscoring its commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable campus.

Universitas Indonesia is strongly committed to reducing plastic waste and promoting eco-friendly practices on campus. The Zero Plastic Program, implemented across all UI faculties as outlined in Rector Regulation No. 4 of 2019, encourages the reduction of single-use plastics through policies that urge students, faculty, and staff to use eco-friendly tumblers and food containers. The School of Environmental Science (SIL UI) enforces strict regulations on using personal food containers and provides refillable water stations on campus. For SIL students with meal facilities, the use of single-use containers is prohibited, and penalties are imposed for violations.

The Faculty of Public Health (FKM UI) has environmental management initiatives focused on reducing plastic and paper waste, supported by designated e-waste bins and environmental awareness campaigns for the academic community. Similarly, the Vocational Education Program provides waste-sorting facilities and encourages students to contribute to maintaining campus cleanliness. At the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UI), water dispensers are placed in various locations to promote the use of personal water bottles, reducing reliance on plastic packaging. Through these policies, UI strives to create a greener and more sustainable campus environment.

Universitas Indonesia implements strict hazardous waste (B3) management policies to protect the environment from potential dangers posed by waste, especially from laboratory activities and faculty operations. At the Faculty of Pharmacy, there is a research waste management policy that ensures all hazardous chemicals are collected, stored, and disposed of following safe procedures. The waste is kept in designated containers and labeled according to safety standards, ensuring that its management complies with regulatory requirements and is environmentally safe.

The Faculty of Engineering also applies a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for B3 waste, which includes handling, transportation, and temporary storage steps before the waste is sent to licensed processors. Waste from various sources, such as chemicals, solvents, used toners, and laboratory equipment, is carefully managed to reduce pollution risks. The Faculty of Public Health (FKM) also contributes through programs that focus on waste management education and the reduction of hazardous materials usage as part of UI’s commitment to a sustainable environment.

Waste and B3 Waste Management Policy at UI Campus

Universitas Indonesia implements a hazardous waste (B3) management policy focused on reducing and safely managing waste. At the Faculty of Administrative Sciences (FIA) and the Vocational Education Program, this policy includes restricting the use of hazardous materials in food and beverage packaging, ensuring that B3 usage on campus is minimized as much as possible. The Vocational Education Program even provides specific facilities for B3 waste sorting, such as dedicated containers and separation processes, to manage hazardous waste according to strict environmental safety standards.

School of Environmental Science (SIL) and the School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG) at UI have established hazardous waste disposal policies, providing designated disposal areas for B3 waste to ensure responsible and safe management.
