Institution's Sustainability/Climate Action Policy

Universitas Indonesia has adopted a sustainability policy through Rectoral Regulation (SK 2893 of 2018), establishing the Green Campus initiative. Supported by UI Green Metric, this initiative evaluates UI’s sustainability. Through sustainable development, UI aims to be a catalyst for social change by raising awareness of environmental importance. By reducing energy consumption and conserving limited natural resources, UI seeks to influence global lifestyle patterns. This policy reflects UI’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness and contributing to sustainable development broadly.

The Provision of Sustainable Environmental Training at Universitas Indonesia

The University of Indonesia has implemented a comprehensive array of training programs, engaging both students and staff actively. These sessions, typically lasting between 4 to 20 hours, delve into various topics aimed at advancing sustainable development efforts to align with organizational objectives. Collaborative ventures with partner organizations, including student associations, are frequently undertaken to conduct awareness campaigns and training initiatives effectively. The training curriculum covers a broad spectrum of subjects, encompassing fire safety protocols, hazardous material management within campus premises, and strategies for mitigating environmental degradation. Additionally, specialized sessions are dedicated to post-new normal disaster management, environmental quality control, and risk assessment methodologies. Emphasizing the paramount importance of sustainable development, these training endeavors ensure that participants, be it students or staff, acquire a profound understanding of its enduring ramifications for the future.

In fostering a high sense of curiosity among its students, the University of Indonesia (UI) implements various assessment methods to gauge their literacy level in learning processes. The ultimate goal is for students to make significant contributions to problem-solving efforts and acquire scientific knowledge collaboratively with their peers. Not only does UI engage in sustainable procurement of goods and services, but it also strengthens its efforts by collaborating with banking institutions to provide funding options accessible to UI. This collaboration extends to the withdrawal and investment of funds for future endeavors, ensuring prudent utilization of available resources. Banking functions are instrumental in ensuring effective and optimal financial management. Through partnerships with banks, UI can access a range of financial services tailored to its needs, facilitating budget allocation for sustainable initiatives. Moreover, these collaborations foster financial resilience and strategic planning, enabling UI to invest in projects that align with its sustainability goals. UI has demonstrated exemplary performance in procuring necessary goods, particularly in sustainability aspects. The procurement of goods and services is geared towards establishing robust governance frameworks to ensure that procurement activities are conducted in accordance with sustainable principles within the institution’s financial systems. This ensures not only the efficient acquisition of resources but also the promotion of sustainable practices and the responsible use of financial resources.

At the University of Indonesia (UI), students play a crucial role in driving and supporting sustainability programs. As agents of change, UI students actively engage in various activities and projects to promote sustainability initiatives. They participate in awareness campaigns, environmental education programs, greening initiatives, and research projects aimed at enhancing understanding and awareness of environmental issues. Moreover, students are involved in the development of sustainability policies and programs on campus, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to create innovative and sustainable solutions. Through their active involvement, UI students make meaningful contributions to creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly campus environment.

Institutional Carbon Emissions

Carbon Emissions Reporting in Accordance with the Company Protocol GHG Standards

UI has been diligent in reporting its emissions in accordance with the GHG protocol provided. However, the university currently only reports on carbon dioxide emissions, overlooking the other six GHG indicators: methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, sulphur hexafluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride.

Additionally, UI utilizes its own calculation methods, such as the UI Green Metric, to assess its environmental impact comprehensively. This approach ensures a more holistic understanding of the university’s carbon footprint and facilitates targeted efforts towards sustainability. This holistic approach reflects UI’s dedication to implementing targeted strategies for emission reduction and advancing sustainability efforts. 

UI Green Metric and the GHG Protocol are both vital tools for assessing UI’s emissions impact, offering complementary perspectives on sustainability.

Despite their differences, both frameworks contribute to UI’s comprehensive understanding of its environmental footprint, guiding strategic decisions and initiatives for emission reduction. Together, they underscore UI’s commitment to sustainability by ensuring a robust assessment of environmental impact and facilitating targeted efforts towards a greener future.

Through strategic policies and partnerships, University of Indonesia aims to significantly decrease emissions, aligning with international and national sustainability goals. Upheld by the rector’s directive, this enduring strategy fosters environmental resilience and safeguards University of Indonesia students from climate-related risks, paving the way for a sustainable future well into the coming decades.

University of Indonesia works towards reducing emissions prevalent in Indonesia, guided by the rector’s decision on climate change mitigation. This long-term strategy not only enhances environmental quality but also safeguards University of Indonesia students from climate-related risks, underscoring University of Indonesia’s commitment to sustainability until 2050.

University of Indonesia believes that through collaboration and synergy, it can contribute to reducing global emissions in Indonesia. One of the key initiatives is guided by the rector’s decision number 1307 of 2011 regarding the policy of mitigation and adaptation to global climate change at the University of Indonesia campus. This long-term policy aims to improve environmental quality and prevent losses to University of Indonesia students. Therefore, University of Indonesia continues to make efforts to improve and prevent climate change disasters and ensure that these policies have a long-term impact until 2050.

In realizing the vision of sustainable development, the University of Indonesia (UI) is committed to prioritizing sustainable programs, particularly in procurement, water and electricity conservation, and the utilization of solar panels for electricity production. UI ensures that all procurement processes adhere to sustainable principles, including selecting environmentally-friendly and sustainable products while reducing the use of potentially harmful materials.

Furthermore, UI implements comprehensive policies for water and electricity conservation across its campuses. These measures involve educating all campus members about the importance of conserving natural resources, installing energy-efficient equipment, and improving efficiency in water usage.

Moreover, UI actively harnesses renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, to generate the required electricity for the campus. This step not only reduces dependence on fossil fuels contributing to carbon emissions but also helps mitigate negative impacts on the environment.

With a steadfast commitment to the principles of sustainable development, UI aims to set a positive example in protecting the environment and promoting positive change towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
