Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
University governance measures encapsulate the policies, systems, and processes that ensure the effective management and ethical administration of higher education institutions, aiming to foster transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in decision-making, while upholding academic integrity and educational excellence.
Universitas Indonesia supports elected representation as part of its commitment to SDG 16, which emphasizes peace, justice, and strong institutions. The university’s governance structure involves students in various decision-making bodies to reflect principles of democracy and equality. In the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), for example, students actively participate through the Student Executive Board (BEM) and the Student Representative Council (BPM), where they have a platform to voice their aspirations and influence campus policies that impact the academic and social environment.
Faculty of Pharmacy holds an annual general election (Pemira IKM FF UI) to elect the leaders of the Student Representative Council and BEM. The 2023 election, themed ‘Revitalizing Democracy,’ encouraged student participation through a transparent, free, and fair voting process. At the university level, UI also has the Academic Senate and the Board of Trustees (MWA), which include representatives from students, faculty, and staff. This structure fosters a democratic and inclusive governance system at UI, strengthening the university’s commitment to building a transparent and democratic campus environment.

Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UI) has a Faculty Senate that plays a role in formulating and evaluating policies and academic strategies, while the faculty’s organizational structure includes various departments that support transparency and accountability. FEB UI students actively engage through structured student organizations, enabling them to participate in activities that enhance capabilities, collaboration, and innovation in alignment with institutional values.
Additionally, at the university level, there are the Student Executive Board (BEM UI) and the Student Representative Council (DPM UI), which provide a platform for students to voice their aspirations and take part in policy-making processes. The Faculty of Administrative Sciences (FIA UI) also strengthens the institution by instilling values of justice and transparent governance. Through these structures, UI fosters campus community involvement and develops an inclusive institution that supports the advancement of education and sustainable policies.
Organizational Structure of FEB UI
Universitas Indonesia has strong student organizations in each faculty, including the Student Executive Board (BEM UI) and faculty-level BEMs, which serve as platforms for expressing student aspirations, organizing student activities, and facilitating skill and leadership development. Through these organizations, students actively contribute to creating an environment that supports education, social responsibility, and character development. For example, in the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) and the Faculty of Nursing (FIK), various activities are held to promote strong institutional values and raise awareness of the importance of student involvement in building an empowered community.

Various scholarship programs, such as the Bakti Asa UI Scholarship, are also supported by student organizations as part of efforts to enhance sustainable access to education. Other student organizations, like Himpasiling at the School of Environmental Science (SIL UI) and Forma at the School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG UI), extend the role of students in managing environmental activities and addressing global issues. The Open Donation program by UI Vocational Studies reflects students’ concern for the surrounding community, fostering an inclusive social culture. These initiatives exemplify UI’s commitment to supporting active student roles in upholding inclusive and sustainable institutional values, while encouraging meaningful participation that positively impacts both the campus and wider society.
Organizational Structure of FEB UI
Universitas Indonesia actively supports the achievement of SDG 16 by identifying and collaborating with local stakeholders to create inclusive and equitable governance. A clear example of this is the collaboration between UI’s Faculty of Engineering and the Depok City Department of Manpower through the Certified Employment Program (CEP), initiated by CCIT at the Faculty of Engineering. This program aims to help reduce unemployment in Depok by providing relevant skill training for job seekers, demonstrating UI’s commitment to sustainable development through local engagement. UI also facilitates student and community engagement through the Information System for Aspirations, Complaints, and Reporting (SIAPP), a digital platform that enables all members of the academic community and the public to submit aspirations, complaints, and reports related to campus and social issues. SIAPP supports transparent and responsive governance by enabling multi-stakeholder collaboration to improve service quality and uphold fairness within the university and its surroundings. These initiatives reflect UI’s commitment to strengthening the social and economic roles of students and creating an inclusive ecosystem.
Moreover, the collaboration between the Depok City Government and UI Hospital in providing birth certificates, family cards, and child identification cards demonstrates UI’s role in ensuring access to essential administrative services for the local community. This initiative makes it easier for residents to obtain the services they need without dealing with complex bureaucracy, thereby strengthening access to justice and public services. By involving local stakeholders, UI demonstrates its commitment to creating synergy among educational institutions, the government, and the community, aligning with the principles of SDG 16 to promote peace, justice, and strong institutions.
Universitas Indonesia fully supports the principles of SDG 16, particularly in creating participatory bodies that engage stakeholders in active decision-making. This is demonstrated through a collaboration between the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration and Universitas Indonesia to organize community service and empowerment programs in Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. UI has established various research centers and bodies that serve as participatory spaces for stakeholders, including academics, government, communities, and the industrial sector. An example is the Research Center at the Faculty of Engineering, which aims to connect academics with public and private sectors to jointly address social and environmental issues through collaborative research.
Additionally, Universitas Indonesia has a strong alumni network through organizations such as ILUNI FEB UI, which functions as a participatory forum for alumni to engage in institutional and community development. Alumni involvement not only helps UI expand its social and economic networks but also contributes tangibly to society through various community service programs and support for institutional policies. The Faculty of Public Health and the Faculty of Administrative Sciences at UI have also initiated programs that involve stakeholders in the planning and implementation of projects related to good governance and social justice. Through these participatory bodies, UI ensures that voices from diverse sectors of society are heard and accommodated in inclusive decision-making, fostering a more transparent and equitable governance structure in line with SDG 16 goals.
Universitas Indonesia upholds strong principles supporting transparency and integrity through anti-corruption and anti-gratification policies, aligned with SDG 16 objectives. A concrete example of this commitment is the establishment of integrity zones across various faculties and units at UI. The Faculty of Engineering (FTUI), for instance, received the 2023 Integrity Zone Award for its dedication to implementing anti-corruption policies and gratuity reporting. This program aims to create an academic environment free from corruption and bribery, providing open reporting channels for the entire academic community.

In developing the integrity zone, UI educates the entire academic community on the importance of good governance, transparency, and accountability in every academic and administrative activity. Through this policy, UI demonstrates its commitment to being an institution of integrity, supporting the creation of strong, fair, and corruption-free governance in line with SDG 16 on peace, justice, and strong institutions.

Universitas Indonesia is also committed to protecting the academic rights of every student and faculty member. Through the nine core values applied across the institution, UI recognizes academic freedom as a cornerstone in fulfilling its educational, research, and community service functions. In practice, UI provides mechanisms and discussion forums where ideas and innovations can be freely expressed, fostering a healthy and productive academic environment. With this policy, UI plays an active role in ensuring that the right to academic freedom is respected, allowing contributions from the academic community to advance knowledge and technology smoothly and responsibly. This policy not only strengthens UI’s role as a leading educational institution but also aligns with the principles of justice and transparency promoted in SDG 16.
Universitas Indonesia is committed to financial transparency and accountability in support of achieving SDG 16, particularly in the indicator of financial data publication. UI regularly publishes financial reports accessible to the public through the UI PPID website. These reports include various information on budgets, fund usage, and financial audits, prepared in accordance with Indonesian accounting standards. Through this measure, UI ensures that financial management is conducted openly and accountability.
The publication of financial data not only demonstrates UI’s commitment to good governance but also builds trust with various stakeholders, including students, faculty, and the broader community. This transparency is crucial in creating an institution free from corruption and fostering public confidence in UI’s management of educational funds. By providing easy access to financial information, UI strives to uphold integrity and ensure efficient and targeted use of funds. This effort strengthens UI as an institution of integrity, in line with principles of justice and robust governance in SDG 16.
