For instance, in 2023, UI Hospital reported handling significant amounts of waste: 40,710.82 kg of organic waste, 93,696.18 kg of inorganic waste, 26,480.95 kg of recyclable materials, 110,106.4 kg of infectious waste, 14,890.05 kg of solid B3 (hazardous) waste, and 1,040.23 kg of liquid B3 waste. These efforts are supported by an organized solid waste management flow that includes separation, transportation, and appropriate disposal or recycling, ensuring proper tracking of waste quantities entering and exiting the facilities.
Furthermore, the Faculty of Medicine has been actively processing organic waste into compost, beneficial for plants around the Faculty of Medicine (FKUI) campus. Since 2021, a total of 7.408 tons of organic waste—including 4.5 tons of leaves, 2.59 tons of branch plants, and 0.318 tons of food waste—have been upcycled into compost, reducing waste and supporting campus greenery.
In addition, the university tracks various types of organic and inorganic waste on a monthly basis. In 2023, Vocational Education Program UI managed 2.22 tons of food waste, 2.56 tons of kitchen waste, and 15.23 tons of garden waste under its organic waste category. For inorganic waste, UI handled 0.71 tons of plastic waste. Additionally, hazardous waste such as batteries, lamps, and cables was also managed, though in smaller amounts (0.004 tons of batteries, 0.001 tons of lamps, and 0.002 tons of cables).
The university’s commitment to responsible consumption is also evident in its continuous improvements in waste management practices. Through workshops, initiatives, and collaborations, UI ensures that students and staff are equipped with the knowledge and resources to contribute to a more sustainable and eco-conscious campus.
