The Faculty of Public Health at Universitas Indonesia (FKM UI) is actively engaged in supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. This initiative emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices in both consumption and production processes, aiming to reduce environmental impact while promoting health and well-being.

The Faculty of Computer Science has a policy regarding hazardous materials, regulated in Circular Letter Number: SE-10/UN2.F11.D/OTL.00/2023 regarding Waste and Hazardous and Toxic Material (B3) Management Policy within the Faculty of Computer Science, Universitas Indonesia (Fasilkom-UI).

Meanwhile the Faculty of Computer Science, Universitas Indonesia, also has regulations related to landfill, as stipulated in Circular Letter Number: SE-3/UN2.F11.D/OTL.00/2023 regarding the Policy on Restricting the Use of Hazardous and Toxic Materials (B3) for Food and Beverage Packaging in the Environment of the Faculty of Computer Science, Universitas Indonesia (Fasilkom UI).
In addition to support The UI Rector’s decree No 2893/SK/R/UI/2018 concerning Green Campus Policy of University Indonesia, The Vocational Education Program classifies waste into organic, inorganic and plastic bottles to be managed according to type, so that it can be recycled and reused.
Additionally, UI collaborates with various stakeholders to implement strategies that enhance sustainable consumption and production, ensuring that these practices become integral to daily activities on campus and in the broader society. This commitment is reflected in the integration of SDG 12 principles across academic programs, aiming to create a lasting impact on environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, Director’s Decision No. 114/SK/DV/UI/2018 supports the Green Campus Program within Vokasi UI, enhancing its commitment to creating an environmentally friendly educational environment.

UI ensures active participation in reducing waste and adopting sustainable consumption behaviors through workshops, campaigns, and educational programs. The “Proportion of Recycled Waste” quantifies the percentage of waste effectively recycled and reused, playing a vital role in SDG 12, “Responsible Consumption and Production.” This metric underscores efforts towards sustainable waste management by minimizing landfill usage, reducing resource depletion, and cutting down environmental pollution. Achieving higher recycling rates is essential for sustainable development, necessitating enhanced recycling technologies, effective waste segregation systems, and widespread public awareness and participation in recycling initiatives.

In line with SDG 12, UI has implemented policies that include strategies to minimize the use of harmful materials and promote recycling and waste management. For instance, in 2023, UI Hospital reported handling significant amounts of waste: 40,710.82 kg of organic waste, 93,696.18 kg of inorganic waste, 26,480.95 kg of recyclable materials, 110,106.4 kg of infectious waste, 14,890.05 kg of solid B3 (hazardous) waste, and 1,040.23 kg of liquid B3 waste. These efforts are supported by an organized solid waste management flow that includes separation, transportation, and appropriate disposal or recycling, ensuring proper tracking of waste quantities entering and exiting the facilities.
Furthermore, the Faculty of Medicine has been actively processing organic waste into compost, beneficial for plants around the Faculty of Medicine (FKUI) campus. Since 2021, a total of 7.408 tons of organic waste—including 4.5 tons of leaves, 2.59 tons of branch plants, and 0.318 tons of food waste—have been upcycled into compost, reducing waste and supporting campus greenery.
In addition, the university tracks various types of organic and inorganic waste on a monthly basis. In 2023, Vocational Education Program UI managed 2.22 tons of food waste, 2.56 tons of kitchen waste, and 15.23 tons of garden waste under its organic waste category. For inorganic waste, UI handled 0.71 tons of plastic waste. Additionally, hazardous waste such as batteries, lamps, and cables was also managed, though in smaller amounts (0.004 tons of batteries, 0.001 tons of lamps, and 0.002 tons of cables).
The university’s commitment to responsible consumption is also evident in its continuous improvements in waste management practices. Through workshops, initiatives, and collaborations, UI ensures that students and staff are equipped with the knowledge and resources to contribute to a more sustainable and eco-conscious campus. These efforts underscore UI’s dedication to creating a sustainable environment that fosters responsible consumption and production, contributing to the global effort to protect the environment for future generations.
The “Publication of a Sustainability Report” is pivotal for SDG 12, “Responsible Consumption and Production.” This practice involves organizations disclosing their environmental, social, and economic impacts, demonstrating transparency and accountability in sustainable practices. Such reports assess progress towards eco-friendly operations, responsible resource use, and social responsibility.
